Top 3: London's amazing food markets (Part 3 of 3)

Updated: Sep 15, 2021

Street food doesn't get any better than this. If you are a food lover and in London, these are the absolute must visit places!

This is the third part of our least to most favourite London food market ranking. Check out the full list here:

Leather Lane EC1N 7JT

By far this one has the greatest selection of foods. It’s mind-blowing! The entire Lane is covered in stalls that sell nothing but food. We went there nearly every day for 4 months and couldn’t even try half the things, it’s so big.

A bonus is taking your food and enjoying it at Waterhouse Square – a publicly accessible area that’s the inner courtyard of a Harry Potter-esque building which provides some tranquility after the buzz of the market (or after being in London in general).

What not to miss: just don’t miss the market as a whole, you can’t go wrong with anything they sell there. Some of our favourites are the Brazilian Chicken Salad, Vietnamese Sticky Pork, the Ethiopian Daal.

When to get there: Tuesdays to Fridays, 11:30 am – 1:30 pm.

Our rating: 5/5

Greenwich SE10 9HZ

This was an accidental discovery when we once went to visit the observatory in Greenwich and it quickly turned into one of our favourite places. The market sells some really fancy handcrafted arts, jewellery and clothing and is also home to some fantastic food stalls.

What not to miss: the Cuban sandwiches outside of the main area of the market where the food stalls are and the grilled cheese sandwiches inside the covered area. Sandwiches sound boring, but trust us, these are worth the try (and the inevitable wait). One more thing is the Jamaican coconut and peanut drops – essentially coconut or peanut covered clumps that taste tropical and make you want to dance.

When to go there: day time, works every day of the week.

Camden Market NW1 8AF

Hands down our favourite food market and quite possibly our favourite spot in all of London. Another accidental find, we discovered this one when booking an Airbnb for a weekend in London. I arrived a few days after Kiril and every day he’d message me to tell me he can’t wait to show me this place. He was right – I absolutely loved the atmosphere of organized chaos. There’s food, there’s hipster stuff, there’s weird stuff, there are paintings and funny baby clothes, there are buildings with enormous props to advertise the shops underneath, there are BDSM leather stalls, there are people wearing that same leather during day time. It’s amazing!

Camden used to be a key trading place in the outskirts of London where Regent’s Canal met with the Grand Union Canal connecting the North (or in other words Birmingham*) and South of England. The intersection housed huge warehouses and a massive stable for the horses which would then dispatch the goods to the rest of London through ground transport. The area was also popular for numerous distilleries making gin. These have now been turned in one of the most massive and confusing mazes of a covered market area you’ll ever visit. Forget about Kapala Carsi, this is the place to go.

What not to miss: everything! No, really, all the food is amazing, but if we absolutely had to call something out that would probably be Roti House which makes curry kebabs wrapped in naan. Amazing! Another thing not to miss is the Ethiopian coffee stall which brews some of the finest elixir for the soul you can have.

When to get there: anytime except Christmas Day, but we recommend you go on a weekday as the crowds on weekends can be too much.
